Karen Therese blends Mississippi-style blues and gospel with Native American musical traditions to deliver what she calls "Indian soul." The unique combination was a success from its inception. Her independent 1994 debut, Karen Therese and Jai Café, received a nod from the Minnesota Music Awards, taking home the title of Best Adult Contemporary Album. She followed up in 1999 with Heart of the Wolf and Warrior of the Heart was issued two years later. Before working on her sophomore album, she spent time in the musical revue Electric Pow Wow and toured the U.S. Since that time, she has established Jai Café, her own production company, and emerged as a Native American spokesperson. The singer/songwriter's lineage includes Native Americans of Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw descent. At college, where she studied political science and music, fellow students named her "most radical" and her penchant for doing things her own way isn't limited to just music. She became a forest worker before establishing her own companies, handling both landscaping and clothing design. Throughout this period, she appeared on-stage at festivals and other local nightspots and continued to write songs. She has appeared on the album Medicine Power from Oliver Shanti and she also devoted six weeks to a cultural exchange program that saw her living among and working with Australian Aborigines. She continues to work with Shanti in Germany and Portugal.
