Akelei is one of few doom bands which create melodic doom metal of the lighter and more romantic-melancholic kind, but without drawing on influences from the Peaceville Three school. Instead they sound like they could have taken the cold alternative pop/rock sound of Canaan and This Empty Flow, and drawn in some heavy doom/death riffage. Wether the band plays hard doom metal with a soft edge or soft doom metal with a hard edge, it's really hard to tell.
