by Craig HarrisFarid El Atache was one of the most influential figures of modern Arabic music. A virtuoso of the lute (oud) and a vocalist known for his sad and sentimental tone, El Atache brought the musical traditions of the Arabic world up to contemporary standards by incorporating modern scales, rhythms and orchestration. A multi-talented performer, El Atache appeared in more than 30 films and composed more than 300 songs and 50 instrumentals. El Atache was initially inspired by his mother, who played the oud and sang. Trained in Egypt to sing with a schools Christian choir, he was encouraged to develop his crying approach to vocalizing as a way to enable his audiences to sense his pain. After studying at a music conservatory, El Atache served an apprenticeship with famed composer Riyad as-Sunbatty. Making his professional debut with small orchestras conducted by Ibrahim Hammoudeh and Badiaa Masabini, El Atache went on to regular appearances on Egyptian radio during the 1930s. Many of El Ataches earliest compositions were written for his sister, Asmahanne, a well-known Arabic actress. His best known composition, Layalil Unss Fi Vienna, a waltz about Viennese nightlife, was featured in the film Gharam Wantiqam. In 1941, El Atache and his sister appeared in the film Intisar Ichabod. El Atache, whose concerts spotlighted his improvisational skills, continued to perform until two months before his death.
