Although Iggy and the German Kids, a German-American collaboration between singer-songwriter Ignacio Marshall and production duo Hubertus Dahlem and Freddy Todenhofer, was formed across an expanse of ocean and borders, the group’s origins can be attributed to a chance encounter at Munich’s Oktoberfest in 2007, while Iggy was on vacation from New York City.
Years later the group would begin trading song ideas between NYC and Munich. Working at home-studios 4,000 miles apart, the group shared vocal and instrumental tracks in creation of their early recordings. One of the group’s initial collaborations, So Hard, peaked at number 70 on the German Top-100 Radio Charts and got 300.000 hits on youtube.
The group has since continued its efforts at a central locale in Munich, Germany. Mary Jane and B-side, Follow the Sun, are the group’s 2014 summer releases in anticipation of a full-length album. Mary Jane is composed of a groovy, kick-snare undertone, layered beneath a playful vocal arrangement. The song’s up-tempo beat reflects the German influence of ein ohrwurm, literally translated ear worm, reminiscent of the gyrating wobbles that float beneath the electronic-infused instrumental.
Iggy and the German Kids hooked up with Echo-nominated director Harris Hodovic, who produced the Brooklyn-based music video after becoming inspired by the group’s unique story and sound. The video, which follows Mary Jane and a group of close friends as they gallivant through the streets and rooftops of Brooklyn, evokes a common coming-of-age story of summer love and total abandon.
