Toying with words and melodies since elementary school, George Lewis III sees his current songwriting as little more than a maturation of that endeavor. At its heart, each song begins with Lewis’ best attempt at writing a timeless tune. Lewis fondly remembers a childhood filled with songs from his mother’s favorite R&B and blue-eyed soul artists: Marvin Gaye, George Michael, Hall & Oates, and Stevie Wonder, in addition to the influence of artists prominent during the salad days of MTV, most notably INXS. Drawn to the fundamental, global language of music, Lewis views songwriting as putting complex feelings into words, then returning those words back to an emotional state through music.
The Other Also’s first official release, Broken Clocks, was a three-song EP recorded by one of Lewis’ favorite songwriters, Jacob Golden. Eschewing the usual methods of removing anything but the sound of voice and instrument from the recording process, Golden embraced the ambiance of whichever recording environment was used, be it bedroom, front porch, or garage, leaving so-called imperfections to harmoniously intertwine with the melodies while recording.
The Other Also’s sound has changed with the influence of time and a revolving cast of characters. Fires is a sonically ambitious record having more density and structure than Broken Clocks while retaining the same curiosity and warmth in recording style. Working with Jake Gideon [The Breakups, The Californian], who lent his extraordinary mind for arrangements and his musicianship, as well as a host of talented guest musicians, Lewis embarked on a two-year musical journey. Approaching each track with the idea that their creativity would be their only limitation, Gideon and Lewis were able to take each song in a different direction, relying on the common threads of Lewis’ voice and the pair’s taste to pull it together in a seamless way. The result is a bold, imaginative album in which each song is able to stand on its own as a work of art.
