A native of the Pacific Northwest, Copland began studying music at an early age; piano lessons began at age 4. Her formative musical years were spent learning and performing in Aberdeen, WA, the same town that provided the world with Kurt Cobain. Following high school, Copland studied music at Grinnell College in Iowa & built a following touring the Midwest for several years before relocating to Vancouver, British Columbia in August of 2011. Since the move, Copland has rapidly set about making a name for herself in the Pacific Northwest as well. Following her Pretty Lies Album Release Tour (Summer 2012), Copland will return to the Midwest, making her new home in Milwaukee, WI. In addition to her own tours, Copland has opened for a number of prominent national and international acts, including most recently pop sensation Vanessa Carlton, jazz virtuoso Jason Lindner, the Mingus Dynasty Band, and the acapella powerhouse the Manhattan Transfer, among others. Her live performances have over 150,000 views on Youtube.
Copland has released two EPs, a single, a collaborative live album, and a solo acoustic LP to date: Streetwise (2008), Black Out the Blue (2010), Youthful Indiscretion (2010), Max & Roxi: Live at the Temple Theater (2011) and Pretty Lies (2012).
‘Streetwise’ is a perfect representation of Copland’s virtuosity, with tracks ranging from a funky blues to a jazz/hip hop remix. In a review of the album, the Des Moines Register urged its readers: “listen to the mature timbre of her alto vocals, astute lyrics and sophisticated compositions”. In Copland’s second album, you can hear the artist evolving towards a more nuanced combination of her two chosen genres – ‘Black Out the Blue’ leans farther towards pop, while managing to maintain intricate jazz sensibilities audible in the creative structure of Copland’s songs & her vocal phrasing. Her 2010 sold-out single ‘Youthful Indiscretion’ was printed on a limited-edition basis to help fundraise for her new solo acoustic album ‘Pretty Lies’, released on May 1st, 2012.
