TJ Smith, an Arlington, TX native, discovered his musical passion at a young age when his mother signed him up for piano lessons. He quickly expanded to cello, which he played continuously for the next 10 years, in addition to teaching himself guitar, bass guitar, singing, and songwriting. At just 13 years old, TJ played the cello at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics as one of the youngest members of the Utah Youth Olympic Orchestra. High school brought on a love for both creating electronic music and performing musical theatre, including playing Beast in “Beauty and the Beast.” While attending Yale University, TJ toured regionally with his pop-punk band, The Sandy Gill Affair, which also featured up-and-coming YouTube music mogul Kurt Schneider. Creating and performing music led to the birth of “ivyleaguepunk,” a YouTube channel dedicated initially to posting live acoustic covers and medleys. Within the first year, ivyleaguepunk reached 50k subscribers and TJ decided to start a separate music channel entitled “TJ Smith Music,” converting ivyleaguepunk into a comedy channel. To this day, TJ has four active YouTube channels including TJ Smith Music, ivyleaguepunk, TJ Smith Gaming, and ivyleaguepunk2 (a channel dedicated to vlogging his everyday life). As of Fall 2013, TJ has a total of 100k subscribers and 3 million views across all four channels, which continue to grow steadily every month.
