Rod Thomas grew up between two villages in the South Wales valleys with nothing much to do but learn how to play lots of different instruments and start to write his own songs. He played them up and down the country for a few years and in 2006 set up his own label Self Raising Records to put out his first single 'Good Coat'.Since then, 'Your Love Is A Tease' was released, becoming a featured video on YouTube and being watched by over 35,000 people. It was picked by iTunes Australia as their staff pick, blogged by people across the world as one of their top singles of 2007, and became a key song in Rod's live set. 'You Get Goodbyes' followed in March 2008, and was played on Radio 1, Radio 2, 6Music, BBC Wales and Xfm by Huw Stephens, Bethan Elfyn, Adam Walton, Steve Lamacq, Tom Robinson, Marsha Shandur and Nick Luscombe amongst others.Summer 2008 saw Rod play at a string of festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude, Summer Sundae, Camp Bestival, Tenby Folk Festival and Green Man Festival, where the BBC recorded his live set and aired tracks across Radio 1 and 6Music. Across messageboards, his loop-pedal based live set mixing up his love of folk with disco beats, was touted as a highlight of many of the festivals by fans new and old.'Same Old Lines', his ukulele-led live favourite, was released in October 2008. The video was playlisted by MTV2, and the song itself picked up plays across the stations again, this time adding to fans Lauren Laverne, Gideon Coe and Rob Da Bank. It was remixed by James Yuill for the Bside, who added a wonderfully electric 80s makeover. It's currently ended up in a number of blogspots' top singles of 2008.Throughout the year, Rod played alongside Sparks, Noah & The Whale, Gotye, Wallis Bird, Duffy, Kathryn Williams, Uh Huh Her, James Yuill, Sam Isaac and Peter & The Wolf, and spent October doing a full UK tour with It Hugs Back. He also remains a much loved busker on the London Underground, where his performances have spurred members of the commuting public to write in to the free papers raving about his music.As well as making his own music, and being remixed by others, Rod spent the last few months of the year remixing other artists including Gotye, James Yuill, Sam Isaac, Tim & Sam's Tim & The Sam Band and This Is Radio Freedom. Two days after its completion, his Sam Isaac remix ended up all over blogspots, and enjoyed its first of many plays on Radio 1's Introducing... shows. His James Yuill remix was similarly intergated into the blog sphere, and ended up as the 13th most populartrack on the Hype Machine list.After a solid year cementing his reputation as one of the UK's hardest working DIY musicians, and being chosen by www.newsoundwales.com as their artist for 2009 (also placing 'You Get Goodbyes' as their 9th favourite song of 2008), Rod looks forward to a busy new year. He'll be releasing a mini album, 'Until Something Fits', making the first 4 singles available again (limited to 500 copies), before working with Boom Bip, James Yuill and Julian Simmons to put the finishing touched to his debut album proper.2009 will also see him showcase at the world famous South By South West festival, which makes him very, very happy indeed.
