Nongoma, a name with a prophetic meaning, means “Mother of song” (in Zulu). She was named after “KwaNongoma College of Music” the first music college for Africans in Southern Africa, situated in Bulawayo and also after “Nongoma”, the royal City of Zululand,
Her first introduction to the world of music was in her mother's womb as her mother, a singer from eMgungundlovu [Pietermaritzburg] sang and performed in her father's band “Children of Nandi\", way back in Hamburg, Germany where she was born.
At the age of four, she wrote her first song, fiddling with her father's bass guitar. From such a young age , one could tell that music was her destiny.
Growing up in Bulawayo till the age of eight, her family then moved back to Europe, this time to Zurich, Switzerland. In 2000, at the age of 10, Nongoma lended her singing talents to a Swiss hip-hop group which was signed to Warner Music on one of their recordings. A year later, together with her two young sisters and childhood friends, she started a girl-band called “Day By Day” in the Zurich suburb of Wollishofen. One could see that she was set for bigger things. Her ability to lead this young band at the age of 11, writing all the music, arranging the harmonies and literally training the band members from scratch, Nongoma set high standards for them from the beginning. They were signed to Tonquelle Music, an independent Swiss record label. During this time she gained a whole lot of recording and performing experience.
At 14, she sang lead with Gospel Singers Wollishofen, a renowned Swiss gospel choir.
In 2005 she moved to back to her roots in South Africa for schooling. She subsequently completed her high school at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg in 2007.
