Autumn in June is an indie-electronic artist from South Central LA.
The sounds coming from Autumn in June’s backyard studio are in sharp contrast to the music you will hear palpitating from car speakers on the street outside. Hip-Hop reverberates through his South Central neighborhood like the repetitive DVD menu that plays after one has fallen asleep, monotonous and continuous. Taking a chance and breaking from the confines of a rap saturated environment, Autumn In June began creating an innovative fusion of pulsating rhythms and vocals reminiscent of British trip hop. This was an unexpected occurrence in one of LA’s most ghettoized communities, and quickly resulted in him adopting a name to reflect his misplacement in this world, Autumn In June.
Growing up on the streets of South Central, Autumn In June’s childhood was saturated by violence, gang culture and a community revere for gangster rap. However, he saw limitations in the genre that dominated his neighborhood and, ultimately, began to experiment with new styles inspired by Daft Punk, XX and British artist, Plan B.
Knowing this music went beyond the norms of what his community was used to, Autumn In June daringly implemented new sounds and melodies within his own music. This new territory felt like home and has allowed Autumn in June’s musicality to manifest and better connect with his audience.
Despite the marginalization he’s faced, Autumn in June is proud of his South Central roots. “Everyday there is a story to be told, characters like you could never meet anywhere else...I am constantly surrounded by entrepreneurs as everyone is trying to make a living by any means possible. That gives you a different perspective on life as you see innovation and creativity as something that is a given, not something you have to develop through a university education,” he says.
Being an entrepreneur himself, Autumn in June built his backyard recording studio from the ground up, using breezeblocks and plywood, so he could have a space to create and produce music without interruption. “The Mighty Wicked Studio” allowed him to get lost in the music, inspiring the production and development of his self-titled debut album.
Autumn in June’s self-titled album (due out 9/16) tears apart the rule book of what music from ghettoized communities is supposed to be. Combining stories of inner-city poverty and gang culture with mellow electronic synths, the outcome is a stream of hard-hitting lyrics, diverse sounds and raw passion.
To ensure all songs are genuine, Autumn In June doesn’t simply write lyrics, but rather freestyles over the melodies he’s created. “I feel that this allows me to create purer lyrics as I don’t overthink the story I’m trying to tell; it simply flows from me as if I was speaking to a close friend,” he explains.
With uncompromising lyrics and a desire to stay true to his urban roots, Autumn in June is using music to forge a path of innovation, breaking the mold of what is expected.
