Midnightminustwo is the brand new sister imprint to deep house purveyors Midnight Records, set up to release multi-genre EPs from emerging talent, and they begin with just that from James Fox and his “Problems Solve Themselves EP”. Electronica, deep house, dubstep and more all play a part, here, with the 27 year old Mancunian, Fox, creating a rich mix which defies true classification within both tracks and the EP as a whole. “Imagine That” draws us in with a lazy, downtempo beat before dubby sine wave bass and sweeping, warm lead synths bliss the cut out amid some superb atmospherics. In keeping with the mmii (as nobody calls it) ethos the next cut, “Day of The Tentacle” changes tack yet flows excellently from its predecessor with a melodious, dubstep vibe infused with electro. Next comes “Xylophone”, the first of two tracks which are aimed at the dancefloor. Resonant bass, evolving keys and tweaky production tricks all combine to create a track which draws it’s influences as much from Boards of Canada as it does the likes of Nathan Fake. Broken beat Detroit influenced house is next up in the form of “Grifter” which is not only a brilliant piece of music but a stunning link between “Day Of The Tentacle” and the final track of the EP, “Scissorfight VIP” which provides a fresh look at 808 driven house, and does so in fine style.
