MT7- FRAGMENTED TEACHING This trio features Hayden Chisholm on alto and soprano, Simon Nabatov on Rhodes, and Jochen Rueckert on drums. Recorded in the old EMI studios in Cologne, the trio cuts some exquisite sides with Chisholm's tunes. Peppered Tear A tear falls onto a Tortilla in a greasy Spanish Bar nestled under Mont Serrat in Catalunya. The score next to the dirty plate is filled with 12 tone rows. Children are crying close by and scrambling to play the video games. Kick start the baby with a drum solo, divide the row in 3, and conquer the 4. Trans Tesla’s inverse Shadow He’s always been your dude, why not write a piece for him? Why be afraid of a simple solo form or a certain Virgina Wolff as a queasy undergraduate herself squeezing her pimples. Tesla couldn’t stop inverting and reversing and neither can this miniature. His shadow still reaches far into the horizon, where energy is boundless. Fly Once upon a distant time, lonesome and alone in a bedroom, Fly was a song with guitar and a voice. Over the years she became a vehicle for a Russian Rhodes scholar to soar on high. “I don’t want Words like yours They hurt me They bind me They tear me to pieces So keep them inside your head... So take my final kiss and fly Geminesque By definition, those born under the gaze of Castor and Pollux. Characteristics in the music reveal themselves to be an easy shift between forms and structures and a never ending search for the vehicle to fit them inside of. When the twins are at peace so too is the world, but Cain and Abel were once twins in the sky too... Heart Cut It was once mentioned in passing by a Sufi who appeared nothing more than a dealer in colorful canaries on the silk road, that the particular organ mentioned in the title of this piece had to be cut open over and over, broken over and over, so that it was truly open for the love of God to stream in. I’ll never forget the beautiful blood red color of his birds against the azure sky of Samarkand. Hunab Ku The search for the true center. The birthplace of stars or simply the massive black hole in the middle of the galaxy? One of many perhaps? With nothing to do for a lifetime but to look up at our brothers in the heaven, how could our distant kin not wonder about the center, the origin, the ur-womb? Fragmented Teaching The score for the piece was smuggled into a shooting range somewhere in the German countryside. The score was mounted onto a target and carefully set up 25 meters away from the composer, now armed with a .22 caliber. The score was shot at 13 times, resulting in fragmented damage. The score was then removed and beer was unintentionally spilled over her. Two days later, she was resuscitated by three instruments and her teaching; once whole, was now but fragmented. Barely a Moon In the great oracular tradition, the saxophonist gives the drummer the key to this piece- should the saxophonist fall, the drummer’s grandchild shall run with the secret.
