As the band selections in this album ‘Pass In Review,’ each has a different story to tell. High School Cadets, one of John Philip Sousa’s most popular marches, is a staple of marching bands throughout the world. Written around 1890, in the heyday of band activities, it was an immediate success and its music sold in large quantities. Amusingly enough, the march’s popularity did not prevent an occasional misconstruction in the title – many orders came in for copies of “Ice Cold Cadets.” Sousa himself, was requested to play “Ice Cold Cadets” at one of his band concerts. High School Cadets is merely one of the outstanding compositions saluted by the All-American Band, headed by Robert A. Williams. Pageant Of Progress pays tribute to “world fairs” past and present. The men who man our fighting ships and sail the seven seas, are toasted in the medley of sea songs called The Navy. Also passing in review are such stalwart individuals as The American Ranger, The Lone Crusader and the Spanish Commandante. And greater variety still, is offered by the exultant rhythms of the Bacchanale from Saint-Saens’ opera, ‘Samson and Delilah’ and the amusing Dance Of The Buffoons excerpt from ‘The Snow Maiden’ by Rimsky-Korsakoff. These and other selections all ‘Pass In Review’ for the best in band music listening.
