Here again is an imaginative variety of combo sounds – warmly alive, and performed with a deftness that personifies Stan Freeman and His Jazz Quartet. Stan’s fanciful harmonic explorations at the keyboard and the vivid rapport between bass, guitar and percussion make this session another unforgettable musical experience. Right from the start, the boys prove that a Flash In The Pan can be enlightening with a sparkling-bubbling bounce that becomes a round-robin between theme and variations, 110th St. Rumba continues in a similar vein, for it combines the variations in Latin rhythms into an impulsive yet smooth rumba beat. Then, as a musical pick-me-up for the sentimentalists who have left their hearts in lovers’ lane, the combo recalls The Night You Were Mine, complete with piano ripples, guitar chimes and a heart-throbbing bass. Another ballad, the sentimental serenade, Purple Shadows, adds to the romantic setting. The combo’s fancy finger work merges with some fancy footwork in the free-riding shuffle toe-teaser called Shadow-Boxing, and they keep up the melodic gymnastics in the jaunty bounce that foretells of Double Trouble. Frolic is a classically styled scherzo brought up to date in a syncopated, happy-go-lucky musical outburst. Those who delight in hearing classical pieces in modern tempo will enjoy the Freeman interpretations. There is simplicity and clarity in the Nocturne In Blue, and indigo echo of one of Chopin’‘s etudes. The same composer’s Waltz In C Sharp Minor also gets cut up to size in the tantalizing jump, Sharping Up Chopin. Anton Dvorak joins the magic circle when his popular Humoresque is revamped into a combo offering that says: Look, Jack! It’s Dvorak.
