Third Ear Recordings are very pleased to release this fine ep by one of the original practitioners of the Detroit dj style, who is now emeging as an accomplished producer. Having been tutored as a teenager in the art of the dj by Detroit’s celebrated Ken Collier in the early 1980s, Delano was coaxed out of a fourteen-year retirement in 2001 by Mike Clark and Norm Talley, who themselves had been inspired by Delano’s djing, to release his first track (Metropolis) on Third Ear’s Detroit Beatdown Volume One compilation (3ECD\u002FLP-001). Six years down the line and Delano has started his own imprint, Mixmode Recordings, also released on Still Music and again on Third Ear, with the collaboration with Derwin Hall titled Theme on Detroit Beatdown Vol2 ep 1 (3EEP-076). We gave this collection of four sublime Detroit minimal House tracks the name Sunrise ep, because we can imagine dancing to these tracks at 7am with the sun coming up. A1: Something For Myself is classic deep Detroit music. At 119bpm this is pure groove. A2: Trans picks up the groove and pushes it right the way through to the end. Using samples reminiscent of Carl Craig’s Paperclip People tracks, this track has all the hallmarks of classic Detroit groove with strings. 124bpm B1: Synergy has a more intimate vibe but again holds the listener and dancer with a compelling groove that seems to have minimal momentum but never misses a beat. B2: Cosmos Revisted is the ‘anthem’ on this ep. It is the anticipation that Delano builds into the track that gives it an anthemic quality. But the anticipation is so carefully controlled that the release never quite comes.. or did it? 122 bpm. Mastered by Stefan Betke a.k.a. Pole @ Scape Mastering, Berlin.
