The lyric imagery in Negroni Eyes was inspired by a Frida Kahlo quote I saw scrawled in chalk on the wall of a Mexican restaurant in Wellington, NZ. I drank to drown my sorrows, but the damned things learned how to swim. My mind conjured up an image of a person knee-deep, wading through alcohol inside their own brain, searching for the cause of the flood all the while knowing that they, themselves are to blame. I guess in a way it's an ode to vices and their ability to mask problems and not deal with them.I'm so excited to have teamed up with the insanely talented guitarist\u002F producer Dave Rodriguez AKA Adventuresof Godriguez for Negroni Eyes. We've been friends for a while, doing acoustic duo gigs around Sydney but hadn't worked on any original material until now. I heard all the awesome beats he was making for Sampa The Great and when I found out that the majority of the tracks were made by cutting up jazz standards the jazz geek inside me decided I had to work with him. I asked him if he'd have a play around with one of my favourite instrumental jazz tunes, Nardis and literally within 2 days he sent me the track and I fell in love with it.
