Radiant Sky is an engaging mix of straightforward New Age style and soaring flute that calls to mind shimmering desert landscapes, dramatic vistas at sunset and hawks circling in sharp blue skies. I like that August includes tracks, such as Arc of Dreams and A Pale Radiance, where the flute takes a backseat to allow him to show his talent with other instruments. While this won't sound quite right, it makes for a nice respite from the sound and keeps Radiant Sky from being simply a flute album with Native American overtones. Instead it becomes a good New Age album, period. August is a superb all-around musician, a good pianist and guitarist, and it shows in the relative diversity of the songs here. Of course, the real draw is his flute playing, and when he plays it solo, as with the beginning of River of Stars or in the breathtakingly beautiful Since the Stars Fell, it's absolutely entrancing and will transport you to another place. The highlight track here is the infectious Santa Fe it's just plain fun, a celebration of the spirit. Radiant Sky is excellent wind-down or light background music, and pays dividends when listened to closely. Enjoyable all around.
