本片根据Stuart Sutcliffe的姐姐Pauline Sutcliffe所著的The Real Life Story Behind Backbeat - Stuart Sutcliffe: The Lost Beatle一书改编而成，讲述了The Beatles早期于德国汉堡的生活。影片主要描写了Stuart Sutcliffe和John Lennon之间的友情，以及和在德国认识的女朋友Astrid Kirchherr之间的爱情。John曾经说过：“我仰慕Stu，我依靠他给我指明方向，Stu认为是好的我就相信。”大野洋子也说过：“我感觉我早就认识了Stu，因为没有一天John不提起Stu的。”Stuart Sutcliffe在1961年离开了The Beatles，开始学习绘画。一年后，也就是1962年4月10号，Stuart Sutcliffe死于脑出血，时年21岁。其实Stuart Sutcliffe对于The Beatles的贡献是非常大的，无领夹克和蘑菇头，他都是始作俑者。甚至是乐队的名称都是Stuart Sutcliffe起的。Backbeat is the original soundtrack of the 1994 film Backbeat starring Stephen Dorff(Stuart Sutcliffe), Sheryl Lee(Astrid Kirchherr), Gary Bakewell(Paul McCartney) and Ian Hart(John Lennon). The music was produced by Don Was.The soundtrack does not feature any Lennon-McCartney compositions, presumably for budgetary reasons. However, the film does include many songs covered by the Beatles as part of their well-known Hamburg\u002FCavern Club repertoire.
