Stevens exhibits a talent for writing the kind of songs that appeal to a wide variety of listeners. Always poignant, Stevens can cover a tune and make it his own, as he does here with the R.G. Ford song Crosscut Saw. He can also hold his own when tackling a Stevie Ray Vaughan number -- his version of Lenny is graphic in its approach and delivery. As for his own tunes, Gone Too Long, Goin' Crazy and the title cut all come across with panache. A most impressive first round for a man with the promise of a long career.
