by Scott YanowVibraphonist Cal Tjader was one of the major forces in Latin-jazz from the mid-'50s until his death in 1982. His final band was most notable for including Poncho Sanchez on congas; Sanchez would in his own way keep Tjader's legacy alive in future years. This fine effort features Cal Tjader's 1980 sextet which also includes keyboardist Mark Levine, flutist Roger Glenn, bassist Rob Fisher and drummer Vince Lateano; guitarist Mundell Lowe is a guest on three jazz ballads including the obscure Gerry Mulligan-Mel Torme tune This Couldn't Be the Real Thing. Other highlights are Bye Bye Blues, Roger's Samba and Will You Still Be Mine.
